What is E.coli?

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are an infection caused by pathogenic organisms such as bacteria entering the urinary tract. The most common bacteria to cause these infections are uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), aka E. coli, affecting more than 150 million people worldwide every year.

E. coli is a normal resident of the bowel. Since the urethra is close to the anus, this bacteria from the large intestine can sometimes move from the anus and into the urethra, which is how it makes its way to the urinary tract. If the infection isn't treated, it can continue to infect the kidneys.

According to research (1), E. coli is responsible for more than 85 percent of all urinary tract infections. These bacteria typically trigger UTIs by invading the superficial epithelium that lines the bladder lumen, called urothelial cells. There are many risk factors for UTIs. Changes in sexual activity, pregnancy, and menopause have a high influence risk of UTI occurrence since all of them affect the urogenital bacterial composition.

Most UTIs are uncomplicated and don’t cause any lasting harm to the urinary tract. But UTIs that aren’t treated can progress to the kidneys, where permanent damage can occur. Symptoms of such conditions often include pain in the lower back (flank pain on one or both sides), fever, chills, nausea, and/or vomiting. Find more about UTIs here.

Many effective OTC UTI treatment options can help treat your UTIs, such as Neptune Bio Innovations (NBI) URICIL.

Link between E. Coli & UTIs
Most types of E. coli are harmless and can even help keep our digestive tract healthy. Some strains can cause diarrhea if contaminated food is consumed or if drinking fouled water. You can be infected even with a small amount of exposure to E. coli. Potential sources of exposure include contaminated food or water — especially raw fruits and vegetables, undercooked ground beef, and unpasteurized milk.

Signs and symptoms of UTI
Symptoms of a UTI can differ from one person to another. Some individuals may not experience any signs at all. But for most people, this illness is uncomfortable and extremely painful. Some common symptoms include:

  • Pain and burning urination (dysuria)
  • Needing to pee more often than usual, especially during the night (nocturia)
  • Pee is cloudy, dark, bloody, or has a strong smell
  • Needing to pee suddenly or more urgently than usual
  • Lower abdomen pain or pain in your back, just under the ribs
  • Fever or chills (a sign that the infection may have reached your kidneys)
  • Feeling tired or shaky

A urine dipstick test can reveal the clinical signs of UTI, including blood and pus cells in the urine sample.
